The 10 Best Dressed Stars at the 2023 Oscars
Before we get to the red carpet – and there’s plenty to talk about – can we just have a moment for Michelle Yeoh?
In winning the Academy Award for Best Actress, Yeoh – who looked like an angel in white feathery Dior couture – became the first Asian actress ever to win in the lead actress category.
And how fitting that Halle Berry, the first Black actress to win in the same category two decades ago, gave Yeoh the award. Yeoh is only the second woman of color to win the award in the show’s 95-year history.
Let that sink in for a moment.
I’m not afraid to say it – I was in tears. And then, I sent Michelle a congratulatory email. What can I say? I was rooting for my friend.
That said, let’s get to the red carpet, shall we?
I’m sorry... I mean champagne carpet.
It was all about the white gowns on Oscars Sunday.
Consider the list of stars wearing white: Michelle Yeoh, Michelle Williams, Ariana DeBose, Emily Blunt, Eva Longoria, and Mindy Kaling.
And those were just the ones I spotted. Surely, there were more.
There were some misses, to be sure, but I thought there were more than a few spectacular gowns. And one male actor worth mentioning, too.
Here you go...
THE 10 BEST DRESSED STARS AT THE 2023 OSCARS:
1. MICHELLE YEOH IN DIOR: How could I not lead with Michelle Yeoh? Yeoh, perhaps thinking she could end up on stage at the end of the night, wore a gown for the ages. Dior couture, no less. When asked how the dress made her feel, Yeoh replied, “I’m in a cloud of happiness.”
2. HONG CHAU IN PRADA: According to Chau, when Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons sent her a sketch of this gown, her only request was to add a Mandarin collar, a nod to her roots. Such a chic and fashion forward look.
3. LADY GAGA IN VERSACE: “What is power?” asks NYT’s chief fashion critic, Vanessa Friedman. She writes, “Wearing a finale look so hot off the Versace runway it barely touched the ground.” Gigi Hadid wore this gown on the runway on Thursday. That’s right. Less than a week ago.
4. MICHELLE WILLIAMS IN CHANEL: Chanel doesn’t often get it right when it comes to red carpet dressing, but the fashion house more than made up for it with this ethereal, romantic white and silver gown and sheer cape for Michelle Williams. The actress’s stylist, Kate Young, is a genius.
5. CARA DELEVINGNE IN ELIE SAAB: Supermodel and actress Cara Delevingne is having a moment. The current Vogue cover star and Oscars presenter absolutely rocked the carpet in custom Elie Saab. Love the color, the jewels, and the pulled back hair.
6. ANGELA BASSETT IN MOSCHINO: The Best Supporting Actress nominee was drop dead gorgeous in purple Moschino on Oscars Sunday. The Bulgari diamond choker completed the look perfectly. When asked about the gown, Bassett said she chose purple because it’s the color of royalty. She did look like a queen.
7. MINDY KALING IN VERA WANG: If you’ve been paying attention, you may have noticed that Mindy Kaling has been looking hot lately. She’s dropped some weight and is now showing off her trim figure – in a peekaboo white gown by Vera Wang. The fit is perfection. And nobody does white better than Vera.
8. RIHANNA IN ALAÏA: Oscar nominee and performer Rihanna rarely disappoints on the carpet and her Oscars look was no exception. The pregnant singer chose custom Alaïa in chocolate brown. No surprise, she’s a big fan of designer Pieter Mulier’s work.
9. EMILY BLUNT IN VALENTINO: Oscars Presenter Emily Blunt looked flawless on the carpet in this body-skimming white Valentino gown. In an interview, Blunt said that as soon as she put it on, she knew that was it. Smart choice. The pink Chopard waterfall earrings complete the look.
10. MICHAEL B. JORDAN IN LOUIS VUITTON: It’s true, Michael B. Jordan would look amazing in a burlap sack. But this is the Oscars, and the Louis Vuitton tuxedo he wore is cut to perfection. However, I think we can all agree the Tiffany & Co. jewelry is what makes his look stand out. Ten out of ten.
