I know what you’re thinking... Labor Day was basically yesterday.
Can’t we pretend it’s still summer?
Here’s the thing – when you cover fashion, like I do, Labor Day means New York Fashion Week is upon us.
NYFW, which officially starts on Friday (but unofficially starts today), is jam packed with shows and events.
My wardrobe for this week is planned with military precision.
This season, the show schedule has shifted dramatically, temperatures will be in the 90s (yikes!) and there are events galore (September 6-14 without a break!).
All to say... it’s a busy, busy week.
What am I most excited about?
Read on.
Wednesday, September 6th
FIT Couture Council Lunch:
Every year, on the Wednesday after Labor Day, the Couture Council at The Museum at FIT honors one fashion designer. Attendees refer to the event as “back to school” because we all get dressed up and it’s the first time many of us are seeing each other after the summer break. This year, CFDA Womenswear Designer of the Year (2020), Gabriela Hearst, is the honoree. I wear a lot of Hearst’s clothes and adore her as a person. This is an honor she richly deserves.
Thursday, September 7th
NYFW Cocktail at Gracie Mansion:
It’s no secret that NYC Mayor, Eric Adams, loves a party. So he’s hosting one with CFDA Chairman, Thom Browne, at Gracie Mansion to celebrate the start of New York Fashion Week. This is the second such event, is very well attended, and is sure to be fun!
Saturday, September 9th
Khaite Show:
If there’s one American designer who is white hot right now, it’s Cate Holstein, founder and creative director of Khaite. Whether it’s a sweater, a dress, a bag or a shoe, Holstein is genius at creating the next “it” item... that thing you must have in your closet. So, her show is always hotly anticipated – by editors and retailers alike. This season, Khaite will be uptown at the Armory and has firmly moved into a coveted primetime slot – 7pm.
Monday, September 11th
Michael Kors, Altuzarra, Tory Burch:
The Monday of NYFW is always a very busy one and all the more exciting because it starts with Michael Kors, who usually shows on Wednesdays at 10am but moved to Monday at the same time. Will the switch stick? Who knows, but it’s a big deal when Michael Kors changes time slots. So did Joseph Altuzurra and Alejandra Alonso Rojas, showing at 2pm and 4pm, respectively. Both were previously weekend shows. The day ends with Tory Burch at 8pm at The American Museum of Natural History. Now, that’s a venue!
Tuesday, September 12th
Gabriela Hearst, Carolina Herrera:
Two of my favorite designers, Gabriela Hearst and Wes Gordon of Carolina Herrera, show on Tuesday. The Hearst show is always a trek to the Agger Fish Building in Brooklyn, but it’s a huge warehouse with a cool vibe, a great space to show off her clothes. Carolina Herrera, which also moved time slots, will show at the Whitney Museum of American Art this season. You heard me, the Whitney.
Wednesday, September 13th
NYFW Closing Night Dinner at Genesis House:
Fashion week wouldn’t be fashion week without a chic closing night dinner, and this season I have the honor of hosting one at Genesis House, an incredible Korean restaurant in the Meatpacking District. Many of my favorite designers will be in attendance, so I’m really looking forward to it! On the menu – dishes inspired by Korean royal cuisine with recipes dating back 1000 years. If you’re in New York, check it out!
“My wardrobe is planned with military precision” This makes me wonder what do you use as your Everyday Carry (one of those “whats in your bag?”)
Thanks for the great post!
Love hearing this all
